The first motion picture ever shown in Nevada illuminated the screen of the Boulder Theatre. Built in 1931, the same year construction began on Hoover Dam, the theatre was the only air- conditioned building in Boulder City for several years, and a favorite place for workers on the dam to take a break from the summertime heat. A ticket cost just 25 cents back then. The building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, though it hasn't functioned as a movie theater since 1998. The theater's future was in doubt for a while, until Desi Arnaz, Jr. purchased it to become the new home of the Boulder City Ballet Company (BCBC). The screen has been removed but the neon-lined marquee outside and art deco fixtures within are a visible reminder of a bygone era. Restoration remains an ongoing process, but the theater now hosts BCBC performances, including an annual Christmas production of 'The Nutcracker.' -- David Hofstede
