The Peanut is one of the oldest bars in the city. And it looks like it. The walls, covered in vintage posters and old newspaper clippings, have recorded decades of drunken scripture. ''Foreigner Lives Forever 4/7/78,'' reads one etched declaration. Actually, they don't. The Peanut, however, does. It's a dive bar, but in that charming way that makes it kitschy instead of depressing. And the music's good, the crowds are raucous and the food is legendary. The super-sized buffalo wings, breaded pork tenderloin sandwich and double-decker BLT have made this a popular spot for lunch and dinner. But at night, it's the cheap drinks and unpretentious atmosphere that fill this bar beyond its seeming capacity. With the juke box blaring and a cloud of smoke hanging over the raucous crowd, the Peanut survives as the perfect type of a legendary neighborhood bar.
