Travelers on Highway 61 South in Natchez, Mississippi are greeted to a startling sight: a 28-foot tall structure shaped like an African-American woman with a restaurant hiding in her skirt. Known as Mammy's Cupboard, it was built by Henry Gaude in 1940 as a way of attracting customers to his gas station and has been standing tall on the roadside ever since. Jams, jellies, pies and pastries are sold within Mammy herself, while another building behind serves up heartier southern delicacies like chicken pot pie, red beans and rice and a variety of sandwiches. Mammy's Cupboard is particularly well-known for its blueberry dishes -- everything from apple-blueberry pies to a blueberry lemonade.

Good Southern Homecooked Food
By mcbphoto1 on 09/05/2007
I ate there recently and was very pleased with the lunch entree, salad and of course the homemade pie with the mile high meringue. The service was fast and friendly. To me it was "just like eating at home"......and I didn't have to do the dishes !!!!

Interesting with good food
By agpoetry on 07/25/2007
I moved from Natchez but frequented Mammy's when I lived there. Oh Wow! Their mile-high meringue on their pies always stayed in my memories. Like all good things it calls you back again and again. I did buy one of their cooks books so I could entertain my family with their chocolate pie recipe. I truly believe that all eateries in Natchez are excellent. Southerners love to eat and know good food.

The Best of Home Cooking
By danjsn on 04/04/2007
If you haven't been here and tried the food, don't comment on the symbolism. Anyone will feel at home and as if they are visiting with family as the best home-cooked meals are prepared for you. The only symbolism here is that you will be treated special; as if you were being treated to your own favorite foods by someone who cares very much about pleasing you.
