This is not high-art cuisine. These are not even gourmet burgers. No one will call the specialty of the house "chopped steak," and no one will offer you a slice of gorgonzola or Dijon mustard to enhance the meat. Hell, you can't even get anything as high-falutin' as a hamburger roll: At Louis' it's plain Wonder Bread wrapped around your burgers, take it or leave it. And Yale has such a long and intimate association with Louis' that it's treated as an ex-officio campus dining hall. But this hallowed place is the very site where the hamburger was invented. And even though these burgers have the look and taste of the kind of patties you and your friends fixed for yourselves in junior high school, people travel hundreds of miles to visit this Vatican of ground-beef believers. Some who work downtown have never eaten lunch anywhere else. While not officially a part of Yale, Louis' Lunch is more deeply embedded in the psyche of Yalies than many of the more architecturally thrilling sites of central campus. -- Constance Markiewicz NOTE: Louis' Lunch closes for the month of August for their annual inventory of spoons.

a generation of burgers

Best burger around- and good price. Meat is cooked on a grill that sits sideways- very different than any place I've seen- meat is very tasty- everyone in new haven and surrounding towns heard of Louis Lunch. Now my grandkids love going there better than McD's or Burger King. Joyce Naugatuck,Ct

It is more the History, peeps!

The burger is good BUT it is the history of Louis' that swoons! Plus, back in the day things were very different including product availability and finances. It is nice to have this type of history here in New Haven.

not all that

i just don't understand what the rave is all about. their burgers are dry and no condiments allowed. i think that people like them because they go there after a night of drinking and they are famished.

at least you know its a burger

I don't understand the excitement about this place. The burger is like a burger you can make on your own grill. NOthing reaches out to touch you. The cheese spread...well..does anyone really notice that its there? If I hadn't ordered cheese, I wouldn't know its there. But there is a certain ambience and atmosphere there. BTW..its true, the do "ban" you for asking for ketchup regardless of what they told people on the food channel. its ok overall, but its not "OMG this is one helluva burger!"
