From the Editors

Black-Eyed Sally's introduced Hartford to a whole new world of barbecue when it opened its doors in 1995. The one thing Hartford was missing at the time was a true home-cooking barbecue and blues house. Well, Sally's met that need, and in the few short years it's been open, the place has doubled in size.

The blues comes from both local and national talent. Wednesday through Saturday evenings, live music comes to Sally's, and frequent musical guests include Phil Guy, Johnny Rawls and Roy Roberts. Some nights are an open-mike jam, and on evenings when live entertainment has the night off, the well-stocked jukebox takes up the slack.

The menu is certain to give you anything but the blues. Sally's ribs, pulled pork, andouille sausage and tender brisket are some of the best in town. You'll also find some of the best and most authentic Cajun dishes around, -- including blackened catfish, Louisiana gumbo and jambalaya. If you can possibly control yourself, save room for a piece of southern bourbon pecan pie. But it may be hard, as the large portions will challenge any appetite. Weather permitting, you can enjoy your dinner on Sally's patio.

TIP: If you've got something on your mind, ask the bartender for a magic marker and leave your thoughts on the wall. If you have nothing on your mind, you can fill it with thoughts left by the patrons who came before you. -- Carl Salminen
