Though Black Woods is technically a small chain of four restaurants throughout Minnesota, each Grill and Bar deviates from the core or "mini" menu with its own signature dishes. Vegetarians are kind of out of luck at Black Woods, but unapologetic carnivores will love dishes like Jimmy's Famous Coconut Shrimp, Steak on a Stick or Stuffed Mushroom Florentine (which one diner assumed was veggie-friendly until she got to the fresh crabmeat). As its full name suggests, the Duluth Black Woods is within shouting distance of the tip of Lake Superior. The view from the dining room is lovely, even at night. Like many restaurants that feel that good food and good service sometimes aren't enough, the restaurant offers two crowd-pleasing extras. First up is the display kitchen, for those diners who relish watching the choreographed chaos of food preparation. There's also a functional scale model train that runs through the lobby, the bar and two dining rooms. If you want the opportunity to save a few bucks, be sure to ask your server about Black Woods' Frequent Diner Program. Basically you receive a point for each dollar you spend at a Black Woods restaurant. Once you reach 100 points, you receive a $10 gift certificate in the mail.

Good happy Hour. Bar fills up pretty quick at end of the week. Food is above average for the area and properly priced.

Over the years Duluth has had many outstanding restaurants. they do come and go, but right now Blackwoods is on top. Their menu is diversified, table service friendly and competent, food well presented and tasty, all at a reasonable price. The restaurant has a comfortable ambience and enjoyable outdoor views. Congratulations to the Flaherty family
