From the Editors

Bob Dylan, nee Robert Zimmerman, was born in Dultuh, Minn. and raised in the nearby town of Hibbing. After an unremarkable high school career, Dylan left town for Greenwich Village by way of a short University of Minnesota stint, and prceeded thence to recognition as a towering poetic genius along the lines of what Walt Whitman might have become had the electric guitar, the blues and easily accesible pharmecuticals made themselves manifest (or is it immanent?) during the nineteenth century.

Which begs the question: Where's a humble bar reviewer to turn when he needs a quote along the lines of Thomas Wolfe's famous "You can't go home again," cliche? Does he crack the bible? Can't do it: Hemmingway used all the good ones there. Hit up Bartelby.com? That'd hardly be sporting.

The answer, as you may have expected, is, er, blowing in the wind. Though the times haven't changed much back in Hibbing, Dylan's maxim "Your sons and daughters are beyond your command" holds no less true in that sleepy Midwestern backwater than in the creatively destructive environs of Lower Manhattan.

The point being that Dylan hasn't made it back to his hometown very often, despite the fact that the proprietors of Zimmy's bar on Howard Street have operated a quaint little Dylan tribute tavern there for going on twenty years now. Alas, all the memorabilia in the world won't bring the bard back to Hibbing anytime soon, but it does make for a nice bar theme. At Zimmy's, you'll find Dylan paraphernalia -- and lots of it. You'll also find a friendly staff, a good lunch and dinner menu and -- if you should find yourself pulling up a barstool around the time of Dylan's May birthday -- a week-long "Dylan Days" festival sposored by the bar.

I visited in May, 2007, for Dylan Days. I had so much fun with the other fans and the owners Bob and Linda!
