If television's Sopranos were real, you just might find them dining at Roma Cafe. The sense of traditional Italian dining saturates the place from the moment you pull into its Eastern Market locale. The parking lot is always full of dark sedans, but alas, many patrons choose private rooms so it seems empty. The wait staff is beyond courteous and professional and even though they carry handheld computers to take your order, the tuxes they sport lend to the old-world charm. And Roma is indeed 'old-world' -- its doors opened in the late 1800s. Traditional Italian food is prepared fresh with ingredients from the nearby market. Standouts include the homemade gnocchi and anything of the various veal dishes. And the cappuccinos are arguably the best this side of the Atlantic.

How dissapointing
By Fnoonanjr on 09/10/2008
I have not been there in over 15 years and I remembered it as a classy good restaurant with great food and wanted a nice place to celebrate my birthday with my wife ... a mistake to say the least t. The charm is gone and it is not as quaint as I remembered .. I read some above reviews and thought they were a bit harsh .. not so .. as one person said .. the waiter was rude and impersonal and threw our plates on the table .. we only got one drink as he never asked or stayed at the table long enough to request one !! As was the case when we got our salads and he was gone before we could even ask for fresh ground pepper ! The food was ok .. but not out of the ordinary .. I couldn't wait to get my check and get out .. to say the least .. very disappointing .. As was said above .. reputation can only hold up so long and then you need to pay attention ... Romas .. start paying attention

The meat sauce is as close to being in Italy as any I have had. Veal is the specialty.
