The Detroit Lions may have been in the cellar a year ago, but they move downtown this season with the opening of their new stadium, Ford Field, in the born-again Fox Theatre district. The 65,000-seat facility should provide a major upgrade from the cavernous Pontiac Silverdome. It looked good enough before it was finished, in fact, to earn the Lions the right to play host to Super Bowl XL on Feb. 5, 2006. With a new stadium comes a different crowd and increased demand for tickets, and the team expects most of its 2002 clientele to be season ticket holders. A limited number of single game tickets go on sale in September. What's nearby: The old Hudson's Warehouse isn't just nearby -- it's part of the stadium. Ford Field joins Comerica Park (home of the baseball Tigers) and the Hockeytown Cafe as part of a dramatic downtown rebirth. Main attractions: The NFL is the principal draw, but Ford will play host to large-scale concerts, beginning with the Rolling Stones. Hudson's Warehouse houses most of the luxury seats, restaurants, food courts, lounge areas, banquet facilities and retail and office space. FieldTurf, a popular synthetic grass, will provide the playing surface. Extras: A glass wall offers a dramatic view of the Detroit skyline. Suites and Club Level seating are all the rage, and Ford Field will have its share of amenities for the well-to-do fan. Most of the 125 suites already have been leased, but Club seats may still be available, ranging in price from $1,750 to $2,328.50. Stadium food: Chicago-based Levy Restaurants (already established at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and at Cleveland's Jacobs Field) will operate six themed "mini-restaurants" on the Club Level. Fans in other areas can anticipate the normal run of stadium fare. Access notes: Ford Field is ADA compliant, and an effort has been made to improve crowding and traffic flow within the building. While the Silverdome held 42,000 fans in the lower concourse, the new stadium will seat just 35,000, allowing more room on the concourse. Ford Field also will feature 40 percent more restroom facilities in the lower deck than at the Silverdome, and 33 percent more in the upper concourse. -- Bill Sullivan
