The city was a stop on the famous Chisholm Trail and became the world's second-largest cattle market (next to Kansas City) after the Fort Worth Stockyards incorporated in 1893. Now the Stockyards area is a national historic district and a major tourist and entertainment attraction. Famous venues such as Billy Bob's Texas nightclub, Cattlemen's Steakhouse and the White Elephant Saloon are here, as are numerous Western shops, museums and antique stores. The acres of pens that once teemed with cattle now stand empty, but you can catch real cowboys driving a herd of longhorns down red-brick Exchange Avenue twice daily (strictly for show). For a big blast of Western music and food, don't miss annual events such as the Chisholm Trail Roundup or Pioneer Days. --Kathryn Jones
