When it comes to steaks, River North deserves its bragging rights for catering to hardcore carnivores. Harry Caray's and Keefer's face off on the corner of Kinzie and Dearborn, while Ruth's Chris and Sullivan's duke it out only a block away on Hubbard and Dearborn. But Sullivan's, the underdog of the popular steakhouses, has earned its respect among the giants. Set in a swanky, supper club atmosphere, Sullivan's feels more like a private gentleman's club with its overwhelming touches of mahogany, sophisticated jazz pumping through the space and vintage pictures of athletes on every wall. On the first level, diners relax in roomy booths fit for a king's entourage. These come in handy after ordering the house specialties, such as the 20-ounce, bone-in Kansas City strip steak, a 24-ounce porterhouse steak or a 24-ounce rib eye. Seafood fans can order hearty oyster, crab, tuna, salmon or shrimp dishes. On weekends, the downstairs lounge offers live jazz for a cigar-smoking, martini-swilling crowd. Upstairs features a more intimate vibe, including a private-dining room for about 50 and a sweet cigar lounge.

The one steakhouse that...

may be pricey but worth it. I've been other steakhouses that are in the running with this place, but we enjoyed the food, service, and atmosphere. Would go again for sure...

no go

Took 3 people here for dinner and drinks, spent over 200.00 and the food was sub par. My steak was tough, rubbery, and over cooked, the side dishes were just so-so, and the service was slow. Although as expensive as Gibsons or Mortons, there's no comparison, I actually think Lonestar (same corp.) is better than Sullivans.

Steak, Steak & more Steak

Ate here the evening of 12/14/2004; This was the first time I had ever been to Chicago and I'll say this is the best first or god forbid last meal a guy can ever have. I had the Porterhouse and a baked potato with everything on it; there were no dissapointments! Next time I'm in Chicago I will be there again.
