Russell's casual family atmosphere, super affordable prices and remarkable barbeque sauce have been keeping the picnic-type tables filled with gratified patrons since 1930. With eight different kids' meals (that include fries, cole slaw or applesauce and a treat) checking in at around $3.15 each, expect lots of families placing their orders at the cashier and snagging seats in the expansive dining area. Listen for your number and tote your paper plated barbeque back to your seat, and ready the buds for an actual taste sensation -- Russell's sauce is very different from every other 'que sauce you've ever tried. The kitchen puts just a smear on the thinly sliced beef (or pork, ham and fish) sandwich, but feel free to squirt more to your mouth's content. Sather the sauce upon the plump half chicken, too. Russell's baby back ribs are smoky, tender and meaty and are a bargain at $12.75 for a full slab plus fries and slaw. Popular sides include corn on the cob, soup, baked beans, broccoli and cheese puffs, mozzarella sticks, and oversized onion rings. If you can't make it to the Elmwood Park or Rolling Meadows locations very often, consider buying a bottle of Russell's Barbecue Sauce ($2.50) to take home.

LOVE THAT BBQ SAUCE
By JLUCKYJOE on 07/25/2008
LIKE SO MANY PEOPLE I'VE BEEN GOING THERE THERE FOR ABOUT 50 YEARS. I CAN REMEMBER LIVING IN THE NORTHWEST SUBURBS AND GETTING EXCITED THAT THERE WAS GOING TO BE A RUSSELLS IN ROLLING MEADOWS. TOOK THE KIDS THE FIRST NIGHT IT OPENED. I WAS JUST AT THE ONE ON THATCHER LAST NIGHT AND REMARKED ON THE WAY HOME THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE FEW RESTAURANTS THAT THE QUALITY HAS STAYED THE SAME OVER THE YEARS. I AGREE WITH SOME OF THE OTHERS WHEN THEY SAY BUY THE SAUCE. I ALWAYS KEEP A COUPLE OF BOTTLES ON HAND. I NOW TAKE MY GRANDKIDS THERE.

Since 1950
By wduffy619 on 01/04/2007
Been going to Russells since 1950. Was introduced by my father and mother. I remember the price of Bar B Q's back in the mid 50's of $0.65. Seems to get better with age. Still go to the Russells at North Ave. and Thatcher. Still remember Marty, bald and wore glasses. He remembered everyone by their first name. Felt like you walked into to see family back then. The taste has not changed a bit and I look forward to going for many years to come. Family loves to take orders home. It reminds them of their childhoods too. Best wishes to all at Russells and keep up the good work... Bill Duffy, Chicago
