You'd better chuck that no-carb diet--at least for the night--if you plan on heading out to this Italian restaurant specializing in freshly baked breads (thus the name in Italian). Pane Caldo, across the street from Bloomingdale's, is a nice, upscale retreat after a day of shopping as the smell of the fresh bread greets you at the door. The breads as well as spectacular desserts, truffles and candies are baked onsite. The cuisine features flavorful pastas, seafood and meat entrees; most notably ravioli stuffed with king crab, risotto, sauteed red snapper filet, roasted layers of organic chicken, and grilled filet mignon in a black truffle sauce. Appetizers run $10-25; entrees are $20-$40. Desserts are $10-15. Wine by the glass runs $8-$40. Pane Caldo also features tasting menus priced at $67 and $79 for four and five courses respectively. This is a great location for a romantic date. -- Audarshia Townsend

A Hidden Gem
By atruereview on 06/11/2006
If you're looking for food that is a little more than the typical Gold Coast staples (enormous steaks or family style pasta), try this restaurant. It's a little slice of Europe...right off the Mag Mile. You will find some of the most remarkable sauces in the city. Great fish...and not just salmon and whitefish!!! It's starts with Richard, who always takes care of our wine selections and knows what it means to provide service to customers. Prices are above average, but the quality more than makes up for it. For the people that have written bad reviews on this site, I might suggest that all they know is fast food. If you're looking for a romantic evening or a great place to treat an out of town client, Pane Caldo is the place!

Glad I didn't pay

Food was good, but very pricey. The room is horrible, long and skinny. If you stand at the bar, you are touching the people sitting behind you. There is not enough room for bar stools, you have to stand. We went on a night when the temperature outside was around 20, and the temperature inside wasn't over 65. Both ladies ate with their winter coats on -- all night long

Molto expensive

My husband and I started dining at Pane Caldo about 10 yrs ago. At the time, it was a wonderful unknown gem in the Gold Coast. Now.....still wonderful, but the prices of food and wine have absolutely skyrocketed. Yikes....
