This bi-level restaurant/lounge combines a traditional Japanese dining atmosphere with a contemporary American clubby look. Downstairs is brightly-lit, offering sushi lovers the option of dining at the bar or tables. The centerpiece of the first floor dining room is a bank of three 3- foot saltwater fish tanks stocked with live fluke, spiny lobster, eel and shrimp. Fish are pulled from the water and cut on the spot to provide the freshest sushi possible. Downtempo drum 'n' bass pipes softly overhead. Upstairs, however, the energy level is knocked up a few notches. Guests choose from soft banquettes, lounge furniture or tables to nosh on sushi and other Japanese specialities such as executive chef Jun Ichikawa's white sesame-encrusted tuna with potato pommes frites. Whereas the music downstairs is soft, upstairs it's pumped up as a deejay spins an eclectic mix of drum 'n' bass and jungle. And the bar is always bubbling with folks sipping sake, martinis and cocktails. A word of caution: If you're aiming to chill upstairs, make reservations weeks in advance.

not all it's cracked up to be

Food is fine, but not worth the higher price you'll pay here. Service was very very very slow, and they seem more taken with their own presentations than the customers are. Perhaps that's what they want you to pay for?

Overpriced and overhyped

I've had two bad experiences at Mirai ('05 & '06), and there are enough impressive alternatives in Chicago now for us all to stop gushing about it. Mirai is very expensive, probably the most I have paid for sushi anywhere in the country, though the sushi is arguably among the city's best. The upstairs is cute and can be fun, but the downstairs is extremely pedestrian and dull. On my second visit, my friend and I sat downstairs at the sushi bar on a Friday night. Our server was pushy and agrgressive with the upsell. The staff began breaking down and cleaning the sushi bar right in front of us, and the server did her part to rush us also, all just before the offical close time. Twice my server walked away with a dish I was still eating, and when the scene became comical we asked for a manager on duty -- there wasn't one. I was so angry after dropping close to $200 that I called the manager the next day. He apologized and promised to mail me a gift certificate, which never came. Alternatives: Tsunami, Coast, Tank, Sushi Wabe.

Very fresh sushi

Uni and other Neta were very fresh when served. Quality of Shari was good, but it was broken when dipped in the Murasaki. Price was too high for even this kind of fresh fish. Overall, I recommend this place.
