Hometown hero John Hogan's new menu is filled with items you would make in your own kitchen, but you'd probably never cook as well as Hogan. So, even if ordering unfrilly steak, chicken, salmon and spinach doesn't seem too adventurous, it is definitely advisable. In addition to familiar comfort foods, Hogan also whips up delights like braised red snapper with basil-covered artichokes, leeks and olives, and poached pear drizzled with warm caramel sauce. It's not likely that you'd cook up these treats for yourself on an ordinary weekday night. Keefer's location and menu is bound to attract an after-work crowd, locals and tourists, and the long curving bar is, like a Kennedy, destined from birth for lasting popularity. The crescent-shaped dining room is very friendly, with simple decor, lots of wood and open spaces and floor-to-ceiling windows that look out on Harry Caray's.

Simply the Best!
By PatRiffe on 07/10/2008
Simply the Best says it all when you dine at Keefer's! For lunch or dinner it is wonderful! Have been to Keefer's many times but I can say that dinner for our 35th wedding anniversary and lunch for celebrating our son's Master's Degree were two of the best experiences we've ever had at any restaurant, anywhere, period. The finest steakhouse in Chicago without a doubt!

I love to sit in a booth in the bar. Steaks are primo and the people watching is great.

Very solid

Hey, butter and salt and pepper are awesome with steak! MY KC strip was cooked perfectly and seasoned so well. The wait staff knows their stuff, they made great recommendations interms of what pairs well with what. The salad portions were large and were pretty good. The au gratin potatoes were pretty good, but I wasn't thrilled. And if they have the Tahitian vanilla gelato, save some room! Good eats.

Great steak 8/18/07

I was in chicago over the weekend and found this place as one of the best steakhouses in chicago. Oh it is the best. I had a poterhouse steak. It was cooked perfectly, you don't even need any steak sauce. When I am in chicago again that's the steakhouse I'll go to again. I have to admit, I had never been there before and I didn't have a clue as to how much the steak costs. They were pretty expensive but worth every penny.
