The River North steakhouse with the big-name chef (John Hogan) and owners (veteran restaurateur Glenn Keefer and radio mogul Jimmy Castro) downscales with a lunch-only cafe and deli next door to the restaurant. Keefer's Kaffe features casual fare, including made-to-order sandwiches, soups and salads. Service includes sit-down and take-out. Nothing's over $12 and the setting is not as fancy as the swanky steakhouse, but guests will find it a step above the usual burgers and fries joints. The space features 50 seats, but on warm days diners can sit on the outdoor patio. Also, at nighttime, Keefer's Kaffe can be reserved for small private parties, but the menu reflects the regular offerings from the steakhouse. -- Audarshia Townsend

A good place, but it's more about the scene than about the place. At lunchtime, you can hear yourself talk, not necessarily true at dinner.

Good thing our first impressions didn't last long. When we walked in the door, an intense smell of cigar smoke hit us in the face. However, when we were seated away from the bar area, we could no longer smell it. The meal was superb, from the crawfish and andouille sausage gumbo (a special that night)to the ribeye steaks, rack of lamb, and two fish entrees, to the apple tart, flourless chocolate cake, creme brulee, and bread pudding. Service was top-notch. Waitstaff was attentive, friendly, and competent. The only annoyance was the noise level. The Chicago Tribune had dubbed the restaurant "conversation-friendly." This was true only if you like to shout to be heard. All-in-all, a great reastaurant if you can handle the noise level.

Had an incredible dinner here and can't wait to go back! While everyone's talking about the steaks we all had fish, my Tuna Steak was spectacular. We shared several things so we could try a good selection of the menu. I would be happy to skip the appetizer's next time and stick with the soup, Tomato Bisque was delicious. It's a beautiful restaurant for any occasion... see you there! Way to go John, and the Keefer brothers!
