Partners Dan Smith and Steve McDonagh perfected the neighborhood cafe concept with their casual Hearty Boys Cafe in Lakeview. The funky yet cheery eatery was an area favorite for brunch and light dinners. Now as they've refocused Hearty Boys Cafe into simply HB, they aim to take their restaurant to the next level. Smith and McDonagh learned the ropes of casual, sophisticated dining when they worked at the The Metropolitan Opera and U.S. Open. HB reflects that training with its warm atmosphere of smooth, hardwood accents, cozy banquettes and intimate lighting. The polished new menu showcases items from their famous catering menu, starting with appetizers such as the smoked trout bisque flavored with orange oil and toasted almonds; and artichoke and proscuitto fritters with a tart lemon dipping sauce. Dinner is all grown up as well: Look for creative offerings such as a double-cut pork chop with a tangy rub stuffed with pumpernickel smoked oyster bread pudding over a white bean maquechoux; pan-fried, soft-shell crabs over a salad of watermelon, feta and mint with a Chesapeake tartar sauce; and seared Norwegian salmon smothered with leeks on a cous cous cake with grilled eggplant and chickpeas. The Saturday and Sunday brunch, a New Orleans-focused feast, will remain the same. BYOB.
