Originally built in 1872, immediately after the great Chicago fire, the Green Door is one of the city's most steadfastly reliable watering holes. It's cozy and spacious, both chockfull of locals and welcoming to visitors and perfect either for a hearty meal or old-fashioned carousing. In a jungle of theme bars decorated in phony vintage ads and ironic posters, the Green Door is the real thing; its walls are covered floor-to-ceiling with its own history in newspapers, print ads, photos and posters worthy of a preservation society. The tap is stocked with drinkers' favorites, leaning heavily toward German and Irish ales. If you're hungry, thick burgers and sandwiches will most likely satisfy any appetite. Standouts include a crab cake sandwich and a triple-decker grilled cheese with your choice of tomato or bacon. Plenty of TVs and a homey fireplace make this a wonderful winter hideout, while plenty of belligerent Cubs enthusiasm makes it a perfect spot for a summer brew. The joint's best-kept asset, though, is the original basement speakeasy; the underground hideaway is still intact and available for private parties.
