Greektown's largest and most-established restaurant gets a makeover. Greek Islands, which seats almost 400 people (in several dining rooms), has been renovated to offer the authenticity of a small village with its tavernas. Guests will still get the signature treatments: the opportunity to watch the chefs cook in the open kitchen (you'll also walk out smelling like grilled meat) as well as the traditional menu of Greek cuisine. Longtime specialties include the Spartan Warrior Feast (pork tenderloin, garden vegetables, rice and potatoes), baked lamb fornou and the Shrimp Tourkolimano. Make sure you save room for the Baklavah and the strong Greek coffee. Greek Islands also attracts a lively after-work scene at the bar where area workers and residents come for appetizers of shish-kabobs and cocktails. There's another location in Lombard. -- Audarshia Townsend

The Best of Greek food
By GildaB on 08/12/2008
Being a former New Yorker I'm used to excellent restaurants and I've been called a food snob. This is the best Greek food in Chicago AND New York. When friends and relatives come for a visit they always insist that we go here to eat and of coure I never argue. I have a cousin coming in from New Orleans and the first thing he said was, "Let's go back." You won't be disappointed if you go to this restaurant. No, I don't have stock in the place but I wish I did.

Mamas best
By Jkstray on 07/02/2008
I've eaten Greek food for 69 years every where in the country, plus my parents were fabulous Greek cooks and they were not only from Greece but our family was in the restaurant business since restaurants began in Greece and since1890 in the states. You don't have to go anywhere else for the best. You do need to know what to order though, since not all Greek foods taste good to all pallets. So try different things untill you find what tastes best to you. The portions of pasticcio are huge and I think splitting one order will fill two big eaters stomachs. You'll find this will be a very reasonable way to dine. G.
