Gabriel Viti's North Shore, wine-focused restaurant is just as colorful as the owner himself. His eponymous eatery, which pays homage to his extensive French and Italian training (with Joel Robuchon in Paris; Freddy Girardet in Switzerland; Michel Guerard in southwestern France; and San Domenico of Imola in Italy), feted its 10-year anniversary in 2003, however, for Viti, the fun is just beginning. Diners will be pleasantly surprised as this wine and food fanatic makes his rounds by popping over to every table to hang out and make wine recommendations. The classic setting will also put them at ease as they settle into an elegant dining room of white linen, mahogany and etched glass. The menu, of course, showcases Viti's best creations, from a roasted herb-crusted Alaskan halibut with shitake mushrooms and sesame soy vinaigrette to a succulent roasted prime aged beef tenderloin with mushrooms, pearl onions and rosemary sauce. Pasta selections include homemade tortelloni filled with spinach and ricotta with prosciutto and parmigiano; homemade gnocchi with fresh spinach and creamy tomato vodka sauce; and linguini with gulf shrimp, asparagus and plum tomatoes. The best deal is the $60 degustation menu, which includes an appetizer, pasta, entree and dessert. For serious onephiles, Gariel's offers an appointment-only wine shop a block away. This high-end wine shop features rare and vintage vino and cigars in an exclusive lower-level setting. -- Audarshia Townsend

A fraud

Gabriels may very well be a truly exceptional eatery. However, the listing shown on AOL was titled Everest. It was only after selecting this option, for my favorite fine dining, that I realized that 1) this "Everest" was in Highwood, not Chicago as is Joho's, and 2) it was described as being owned by Gabriel and being epynomous (sp.?) which would mean that it was called Gabriel's. Count this as a vote for Jean Joho's Everest, a paragon of all fine dining is supposed to be.

Having eaten in the best restaurants in all the major cities thruout the US and abroad,Gabriel's ranks amongst the top three in service and food. It is the only restaurant that I will recommend without hesitation, because it consistantly maintains such high standards of excellence. Having Gabe greet you at the door also gives one the feeling that the boss has a "hands on"policy which is rare to find in todays restaurants.

This restaurant does what many restaurants pretend to or wish they could do. The service was excellent, the food was also excellent and the service outstanding. Seeing the food being prepared in the kitchen is always a special treat and Gabriel's puts on a great show. Seafood is our first choice in a new restaurant and the skate served was the best I have had anywhere. I recommend this restaurant unequivocally remembering ANY restaurant can have a "bad night".
