This slightly upscale Mexican eatery splashes into a progressive Northwest Side neighborhood, aiming to offer diners something beyond the usual Latin fare. Owned by proteges of Frontera Grill and Mia Francesca, Fonda del Mar specializes in spicy seafood choices like the red snapper or seafood soup (with mussels, clams, shrimp, calamari and Mahi Mahi). Many of the dishes may also be prepared vegetarian-style. You'll also find hearty Latin-focused dishes such as the borrego en mole negro, or roasted lamb chops with black mole and garlic mashed potatoes, on the menu. The decor plays off its name (which means "restaurant by the sea" in English) with cheery colors, animated photos of Mexican resorts and contemporary furniture.
