A water-main break shut down Room 12's operation for most of 2005, giving the owners the opportunity to re-concept the South Loop eatery. Instead of going back to the drawing board, they transformed it into Bongo Room South, mimicking their super-successful breakfast nook of the same name in Wicker Park. Now SoLo-ers can munch on Bongo Room signature items such as the chocolate tower French toast and three-apple brioche French toast in a cheery, brightly lit room with futuristic furniture. Other menu items include sandwiches, salads, egg dishes and a breakfast burrito. Like the original, look forward to experiencing an atmosphere that's both hip and welcoming. Contemporary music, varying from acid jazz to Neo-soul sounds, fills the air, but you'll still get to enjoy your conversations. On weekends, there's usually a 10- to 15-minute wait (the original usually has a 30- to 45-minute wait on weekends), but time flies by fast. The front-room waiting area features a booth and a juice and coffee bar.
