Ever since Ann Sather, now deceased, opened her original Swedish restaurant on Belmont Avenue in 1944, her cinnamon rolls have been legendary. (Don't even try to leave without sampling one--the rolls come with your meal and are also are available for carry out.) This cafe is a smaller version of the Ann Sather restaurants on Belmont in Lake View and on Clark Street in Andersonville. (There is another Ann Sather Cafe on Clark Street south of Diversey Avenue in Lincoln Park.) The menu includes salads, sandwiches, soup and chili, but mainly this is a breakfast destination. Waffles, Swedish pancakes, omelets, baked goods and variations on eggs benedict (crab cake, eggs Florentine) are the real draws. The specials are the priciest items available, and run about $7-$8; the average item is around $5. This full-service cafe gets pretty cramped and crowded; parties of six and up may have a rough go on the weekends, though table turnover is pretty quick.
