She's all about sweets; he's all about savories. But Malika Ameen and Mohammad Islam, an up-and-coming culinary couple, have a lot more going on than what meets the eye. After several high-profile stints at such places as the Dining Room in the Ritz-Carlton Chicago, Jean-Georges Vongerichten's Mercer Kitchen in Soho's Mercer Hotel, and the Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, they're ready to make magic in their very own kitchen. With Aigre Doux, which specializes in contemporary American cuisine, they'll focus on what they do best. The restaurant combines an upscale, yet inviting dining room with a full-scale bakery (for those who need to grab and go). Mohammad Islam, who acts as executive chef and wine director, will oversee the main kitchen. The opening menu includes eclectic selections such as a slow-baked salmon with curried parsnip puree, braised endive and citrus emulsion; Colorado rack of lamb, truffled grits and fava bean salad; and a Niman Ranch burger. Pastry chef Malika Ameen heads the bakery, which offers a warm, rustic atmosphere in the front of the space. Opening daily at 10AM, it serves Ameen's specialty paninis, sandwiches, soups, salads and pastries.
