Now in a new location in the Millmont Center behind the Barracks Road Shopping Center, Sloan’s is a longtime favorite of thirty- and forty- something locals. While Sloan’s is known a sports bar, they don’t display the tiresome paraphernalia typical of other such establishments. Rather, Sloan’s is sporty in the sense that it’s the kind of place that the Charlottesville Blues (a local softball team) or summer-league lax players might head for after a game. Coaches of various organized sports can often be found at the bar planning strategies or analyzing the past season over a cold beer. And sometimes an entire Little League team will descend on the place for dinner. Inside, you’ll find lots of wooden tables and a big three-sided bar with a TV. The new location affords more space to spread out, and an outdoor patio (which looks out over a parking lot, but is still a pleasant place to sit and escape from the interior’s smoke). The menu covers a standard selection of burgers, chicken fingers and nachos, and the beer is mostly domestic. While not distinctive in any discernible way, Sloan’s commands a loyal clientele of C’villians who just want a friendly, familiar place to grab a pitcher. —Kim Mattingly
