From the Editors

You've probably driven past the Wine Cellar many times and never noticed it. A small wrought-iron door by the entrance of Public Alley 415 is all that announces this small restaurant. Look for the valet by the door during open hours (dinner Tuesday through Saturday) and be prepared to use him, as parking in this area is tough. Once you walk through the door though, it's a whole other world. The Wine Cellar does actually look like a converted cellar -- it's a small brick room with 10-15 tables crammed around the foundational columns. It's brighter than you would expect, with splendid murals of historic Boston lining the walls.

Fondue is the specialty here. Prepare to break out of the standard gruyere cheese and chocolate (though they are done well), since the Wine Cellar touts over thirty different kinds of fondue matched with beef tenderloin, chicken, lamb, shrimp and sausage. Try the "Crazy French," which pairs marinated kangaroo, ostrich and rabbit with olive oil.

This is a perfect date place -- and okay if you are a fondue-a-phobe. Other offerings include salmon, paella and steak frites. -- Melanie Miller (Photo: Melanie Miller for AOL CityGuide)
