On its opening in 2002, Tangierino brought a splash of exoticism to conservative Charlestown -- an enclave whose minimal dining scene had previously been dominated by Todd English. Inured to a diet of thin-crust pizzas (Figs) and truffle emulsions (Olives), townies scarcely knew what to make of this unexpected new option, where the emphasis is on unconventional spices and there's nary a pasta special to be had. But the audacious strategy of its owners effectively transformed the landscape in this old-school neighborhood, morphing Main Street into a magnet for the city's see-and-be-seen set. It's little wonder that Tangierino has attracted so much traffic from Boston, Cambridge and beyond: to trespass the threshold of its jewel-toned, velvet-draped dining room is to enter a realm of fantasy. One can comfortably imagine Scheherezade spinning yarns in the seductive hookah lounge, where wrought-iron screens, filigreed lanterns and private tents add to the aura of escapism. Though the menu seems almost like an afterthought in a space so cinematic, Tangierino has earned plaudits for its inventive Moroccan cuisine. Despite early unevenness in the kitchen, the menu has become worthy of its sumptuous locale, awakening diners to unexpected flavors like harissa, za'tar and merguez.Angling to eat like a sultan? Start with harira, a subtle, smoky soup. For entrees, skip the couscous and opt for salmon tagra, a harissa-kissed filet accompanied by "Moroccan-essenced" vegetables, plum tomato tartar and orange glace. Before adjourning to the hookah lounge (an inventive way to bypass Massachusetts' no-smoking laws), defect from the culinary Casbah for a Euro-style chocolate souffl cake, luxuriating in textures as smooth as the silk on the ubiquitous throw pillows -- which, along with most of the other furniture, fixtures and art, is for sale.

Snooty, Snobby, You've got to be Kidding
By Student3E on 05/28/2008
Went into the lounge for the first time two weeks ago Thursday night. Was with my mom and brother who were visiting from NY. We thought we would have a few bottles of wine and smoke. My mom and I sat down as the place was empty and no hostess came up to us when we walked in. My brother finished a cigar outside. After 5 mins., a woman came over and asked how many. She then turned tol the couple sitting at the table next to us, who seemed to be on a date and told them that they would have to move because we were a party of 4 and they were sitting at a table that could sit a party of 4. (By the way, did I mention that the place was practically empty?) The couple was nice, said okay, that they would take the check and just wanted to finish their bottle of wine. The server walked away. Not a minute later, another server came over to the couple and told them that they would have to move "RIGHT NOW". My mother and I looked at each other, grabbed our bags and walked out. It was horrible and rude, and well downright snobby.

I recently ate in the lounge for the first time. very tasty starters and apps. The service was good and the restaurant has a great ambiance. they have a 25 per person rule in the lounge so it can get costly. but overall i enjoyed it and will go back

I made a reservation on Opentable.com two weeks before our dining date. This was a birthday dinner for my husband. Our 3 daughters and his mother were joining us and we were really looking forward to it, especially since he requested Moroccan cuisine. The day of the reservation, I called in the morning to make sure of the dress code and to make sure that my 13 yr old would be allowed in (as they have belly dancing, so who knows). They assured me that she would be allowed in the restaurant and that dress was casual. I said, 'Okay, see you tonight." The woman replied, "Yes, thank you." At 3:10pm that afternoon, I received a call from the restaurant saying that they had to cancel our reservation as they were under construction. They thought they would be able to open, but they could not. I said, "You're waiting till NOW to tell me this? This is a birthday celebration. Our reservation has been confirmed online and even this morning." "Oh, yes I know. We're sorry." I replied, "Wow, thanks a lot for calling!" My daughters and I scrambled and made our own fabulous moroccan dinner. How would they not know the morning of our reservation, that they would be unable to servce dinner until 3 that afternoon? Pathetic. Then I received an email from Opentable thanking ME for cancelling my reservation!!!!!!!!!
