Despite the multiculturalism of its culinary landscape, Cambridge has never been a destination for authentic Thai food, leaving the genre to Bostonian standbys like Brown Sugar and Montien. With the advent of Sugar & Spice, Porter Square gained its own hub for preparations redolent with lime and lemongrass -- and, in keeping with the neighborhood's student population, these champagne delicacies are available to those living on beer budgets. Owner-chef Penjan Kridaratikorn is no newcomer to the scene, having attracted a following with outposts of Sweet Chili in Arlington and Inman Square. With Sugar & Spice, she switches gears from Pan-Asian to "Thai Thai," returning to the cuisine she gleaned from her grandmother. The new restaurant also raises the bar for design in pedestrian Porter Square, with a scheme featuring psychedelic stained glass and light fixtures worthy of the 'Jetsons.' The encyclopedic menu furthers the atmosphere's theme of fantasy fulfillment, offering nearly 100 options for everyone from vegans to hardcore carnivores. Though partisans of pad thai certainly won't go hungry here, the kitchen's expertise with obscure native dishes is unequalled. Standouts include a perfect papaya salad, steamed ginger fish and 'Excited Chicken' (served with stir-fried vegetables and aromatic herbs in a crisp wonton shell).

Eaten at Sugar & Spice 3 or 4 times. Food is definitely above average for neighborhood Thai. Seafood Hot Pot (brought to your table to cook in front of you) is novel and good. I found the salmon with eggplant (called Fish Story) boring and the fish dry. Better choices are the stir fried sort of things, chili lime and ginger dishes that come in seafood and chicken versions. Service is fast, and the atmosphere is upbeat. The flowers in the window boxes that line the storefront are truly superb at all seasons. 4 stars for a casual ethnic eatery.

Amazing

Whatever with what avacadox says -- if you're concerned with the sexual preference of those chewing your food around you then you yourself are not a 5 star person. Sugar and Spice has the best food and atmosphere of any place around. The service is great, the prices are far too low (i think they deserve to charge much more). I would go here every meal of everyday.

Almost perfect

Food was delicious and the seating intimate, which may be why there were so many lesbians there and why I can't give it a perfect 5 stars. Sweet Chillys in Cambridge remains my top choice for Thai and straight women.

Conveniently located 1 block from Porter Square station. Clean and hip atmosphere. Delicious, authentic and reasonably priced dishes. Attentive wait staff. One of the best Thai restaurants in the Boston area.
