With Krispy Kreme tossing its hat in the ring, Honey Dew has to work a little harder to maintain its status as runner-up in Boston's doughnut wars. Founded in Mansfield, Mass. in 1973, the folksy chain has evolved to include more than 150 franchises throughout New England. It's a drop in the bucket compared to Dunkin's ubiquity (the Quincy-based giant operates more than 600 franchises in the Boston metropolitan area), but Honey Dew is happy with its reputation as a smaller, homier, less corporate breed of bakery. Fans feel the difference shows in the chain's superior products, which range from traditional glazed donuts to exotic Coconut Jelly Sticks. Like Dunkin', Honey Dew has expanded its menu to include muffins, bagels, Dew Drops (donut holes) and assorted pastries. The resemblance ends at the beverage menu, however, with the smaller chain eschewing Coollattas in favor of house blend coffee Regulars swear by the Boston cream and chocolate frosted (which comes in two versions: yeast or cake), while decadent diners go for options such as Bavarian cream and honey dip crullers.
