Rate and Write a Review It takes cojones to call yourself the Donut King in the town where Dunkin' Donuts was launched, but partisans of this old-school bakery believe the crown belongs on Copeland Street. You've gotta love a place that uses a headstone as a billboard, though the imagery might seem a little daunting to those with high cholesterol. In operation at the same location (with the same baker) for more than two decades, the King houses its wares in glass cases as old as its business license.Among the other originals you'll find here are certain customers, including a contingent of amiable retirees who arrive daily for a dose of "the usual." This is a place where the counter staff remembers how you like your coffee and sets aside a special batch of cranberry-blueberry muffins because they know you don't like frosting. These personal touches may inspire loyalty, but customers wouldn't keep coming back were it not for the addictive doughnuts, which are homemade, hand-cut and decorated in-house. Top sellers include honey-dipped jelly and Boston cream, though those with exotic tastes opt for flavors like chocolate butternut, apple spice, lemon stick and chocolate coconut. If your obsessions aren't answered by the nearly 30 varieties of doughnuts, there are alternatives -- among them danishes and cookies.
