There's a reason why most pub-slash-restaurants are known for their beer -- especially in a neighborhood like Porter Square, where the clientele is conditioned to regard bar snacks as a luxury. But Christopher's proves itself to be the rare exception to the rule: an atmospheric local pub as notable for its entrees as it is for its ales. Any one aspect of the scene here might make it worthy of consideration, but the sum of its parts renders it irresistible. In the mood for a fireplace? Try the first floor. Seeking obscure microbrews? Check the encyclopedic beer list. Craving Tex-Mex, hearty pastas, vegetarian cuisine or all-natural burgers? You'll find that all of the above -- and other wholesome comfort foods -- are staples of the eclectic menu. While those angling for upscale entrees can spring for dishes like grilled salmon with citrus vinaigrette or mussels over black pepper linguine, the best bet here may actually be the most prosaic. Where burgers are concerned, there are few places in the city capable of contending with Christopher's. Unlike the artery-challenging slabs served at the average pub, the patties here are made of all-natural beef, approved by the U.S.D.A. and entirely free of hormones and preservatives. Raising the bar even further are creative toppings like guacamole, caramelized onions and vegetarian chili -- many of which are derived from organic ingredients. With six cheeses to choose from and the option of exchanging your bun for a toasted English muffin, it's no wonder this wood-paneled oasis is a hit with Cambridge's most discerning carnivores. -- Julia Clinger

Worst service on EARTH!

That pretty much sums it up. It is hard to explain how waitstaff can be both totally inattentive, and yet incredibly rude, but they somehow manage it. .

Not great, but not bad. If you want a decent meal, this is a decent place to go--and the prices are much better than most anywhere in Harvard square. It's a "sandwich and beer" type of place-and on a Friday or Saturday night bring your vocal cords if you want to communicate.

Stuffed...French...Toast....Dear god...sooooo good...becoming..monosyllabic just thinking about it...food..good...

Anyhoo...they also have good burgers, fajitas and desserts...but I always make the effort to head on over to Christopher's for sunday brunch for a nice helping of thick stuffed french toast and a nice glass of mimosa to top it off with!

That's my story and I'm sticking to it! ~(_8(*)

I would NOT go back to this restaurant on a Saturday night. I've been there many times before, but the crowd on Saturday was obnoxious. Plus, the food was disgusting. My girlfriend ordered a blackened cajun chicken sandwich; apparently 'Cajun' = chili powder because there were 2 inches of the stuff on top of the chicken. The rest of our food was bland and the service was slow.
