Despite its name and appropriately good sandwiches, Charlie's has come to be known for something else: its hearty and enjoyable breakfast. The Hungryman feast on its menu -- including giant three-egg omelets, french toast and griddle cakes (chocolate chip and banana available) -- has become an institution, as has turkey hash, a proven universal favorite. Equal parts old-school diner and neighborhood coffee shop, Charlie's exudes old South End character while appealing to the current culture of the neighborhood. At this place, all are comfortable and welcome. Regulars like police officers and cab drivers mingle with locals (and sometimes celebrities; check the walls to see who's been there) at the timeless counter stools and communal tables. Come to a neighborhood mainstay and see what it takes to stay in business since 1927. Apparently there's one thing it doesn't take: There are no patron bathrooms at Charlie's, so keep that in mind as you get your coffee refill.

Not as clean as it looks in the picture

There is a long list of choices, coffee is just fair (not very flavorful) and though it can be fun and friendly, one cannot hang out a while, read your paper and just relax. Since it is small they want you in and out. Don't really mind sharing a table, but once in a while would like some early morning privacy. Does not look that clean.

I feel like Norm from Cheers when I go to Charlie's. Everyone says "Hello." The food is good, service is fast and hot food is always hot. I have my power breakfast (turkey hash) at least once a week. It is the best! Arthur, Chris and Marie are a tradition in the South End.
