South End shiatsus and Back Bay basenjis -- as well as The Improper Bostonian and Boston Magazine -- agree: Paws is the only dog-walking game in town. Launched in 1996 by a 22-year-old animal-lover, the operation has grown to a staff of more than five walkers, many of whom are refugees from the corporate proletariat. All walkers are required to complete courses in Pet First Aid and CPR, and participate in an ongoing series of refresher classes on issues like canine aggression and training uncooperative animals. Serving not only Boston's bastions of pedigreed pets (the Back Bay, North and South End and Beacon Hill neighborhoods), Paws also covers the humbler hounds of Fenway and Jamaica Plain. A boon for doting dog owners with hectic schedules, the service keeps walks to a four-dog maximum, with chaperones tending to the socialization of each ward. Other services offered are in-home and out-sourced pet boarding and in-home dog-sitting.
