It's the crown jewel of Charm City's own version of 'West Side Story.' When redevelopment plans for the western edge of downtown were being drawn up, it was decided that a world-class arts and entertainment venue would be the perfect complement for the project. The France-Merrick Performing Arts Center encompasses three historic buildings -- the old Western National Bank, venerable Eutaw Savings Bank and the once-proud Hippodrome Theatre -- which have been painstakingly preserved and rehabilitated into a new state-of-the-art showplace at the corner of Baltimore and Eutaw streets. The area is being reborn with the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center as its centerpiece. Broadway shows and top-flight entertainers perform in a 2,276-seat main theater (with a second area for meetings and smaller performances). A bistro is inside France-Merrick, parking is available at pay garages in the neighborhood, and the Metro is a two-block walk from the facility.
