This Threadgill's is the original and differs from its South Riverside cousin in a few distinct ways. Sure, the food is still good ol' down-home Southern cookin'; you'll find the famous chicken-fried steak, meat loaf, cornbread and those other-worldly hushpuppies and cream gravy that sing through your veins. But this Threadgill's occasionally takes forays into the more sophisticated dining area, with chef Raymond Tatum changing it up from time to time. It also has the distinction of being the bar and restaurant that gave Janis Joplin her start. It still has music and great food, and -- judging by the reactions of locals and tourists alike -- will continue to do so as long as Austin is the capital of the Lone Star State.--Mike D'Alonzo
