This landmark of Atlanta Southern cooking suffered a disastrous fire a few years ago and then remodeled for the better, although the menu didn't really change much. When your relatives come down south from Ohio, looking for old South cooking, this is the place to take them. Inexpensive and straightforward, the Colonnade is Atlanta twenty years ago; even some of the same waiters are still going through their paces. But forget that and enjoy Southern three-vegetable cuisine at its finest, featuring fried chicken, shrimp, fried salmon patties, chicken fried steak and potpies. You'll get your iced tea sweet and sweet potatoes with most entrees. There's a full bar now, but imagine it when there was no liquor license and Southern gentlemen brought along their flasks to sip in the parking lot -- that was a lot more fun. Enjoy a cocktail, come for the chicken and stay for the veggies and peach cobbler.

Best Fried Chicken in Atlanta
By Njguyinga on 07/03/2008
Took a friend in from Chicago there recently after he raved about Harold's in his home city. He agreed that this was as good tasting friend chicken that he has ever had. Wonderful food, great service, and a slice of the old Atlanta eateries before the emergence of chain restaurants in strip malls. Veggies are also awesome.

The Colonnade (which has no colonnade) just keeps getting better and better. It's located in an evolving neighborhood... Cheshire Bridge... that has several more of Atlanta's finest restaurants... along with antique shops, and a few girly clubs. In addition to its extensive list of traditional Southern dishes, you'll find the new chef has enlivened the daily menu with fresh seafood, meat, vegetable and salad offerings. You can go elsewhere in Atlanta and pay quite a bit more for the same dishes.. and they usually won't be as satisfying. The Colonnade has a full bar and lounge... and is known for its full-bodied cocktails. The scene is mostly adult... lots of gay and gray. But many families bring their children along for some of the best food in town. Loyal customers come again and again, year in and year out. The wait staff is also very stable, and know many "regulars" by name and preference. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I haven't lived in Atlanta in fifteen years, but happened to be back Feb. 05 and stopped by the Colonnade. Glad I did. The martinis were chilled and the southern vegetables were just right. The best fried chicken livers I have ever tasted. Worth returning often just to eat there.
