It's called a mountain because mountains are hard to come by around here. But Stone Mountain is, in fact, a huge hunk of exposed granite -- a rare and astounding example of an exfoliated dome, to all you fans of geology. The monolithic memorial relief carving, begun by the same artist who carved Mount Rushmore, honors three major figures of the Confederacy: Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson. The huge face of the mountain is the staging area for the very popular Lasershow Spectacular.Of all the recreational opportunities the Atlanta area has to offer, Stone Mountain is surely the most comprehensive. Boating, fishing, golf, camping, paddle boats and tennis are among your options. Hot summer days draw grateful, landlocked crowds to the four great water slides at Stone Mountain Park's Beach & Waterslide area, including the Mountain Screamer and Southern Pipeline, or catch some sun on the white-sand beach set on the huge Stone Mountain Lake. A children's playground (with toilets and a water fountain) features a maze of slides, tunnels and things to climb, as well as a toddler's play structure. Picnic tables dot the scene everywhere you go. You'll be hard-pressed to choose which of the many special attractions to visit. Everything from a re-creation of an 1800s plantation to a Car and Treasure Museum will vie for your attention. Hiking to the top of the mountain is also popular. The trail, a mere 1.3 miles, will make huffers and puffers of all but the most fit. The view from the top -- 1,683 feet above sea level -- is nothing less than spectacular when the air is clear. If the hike is more than you care to take on, you can also reach the summit by cable car.

Georgia's Best Kept Secrete

Stone Mountain Park should be somehow listed as one of the greatest natural happenings in the making of the world. Altough it is just one Large Rock, it is all clean and bright and must have been put on earth to be a natural place for a state park and funland. I just can't beleive I never heard about it or even read about it in travel papers. Nobody I told about it ever heard of it here in NY. I have traveled the US for 40 years and in Atlanta area many times and don't know how I missed such a great spot. Bigger and cleaner then so many campgrounds all over USA

My daughter, two young grandsons and I spent two nights at Stone Mountain last week. The area is quite lovely and has lots to offer. In the Crossroads area we found many employees who could not answer our questions. No one knew where to send us to rent a stroller. We had to go back to ticket area to find out. Then the building we were sent to to get the stroller was closed. It never opened at all the day we were there. Hours of operation were 10-5 although many areas did not open until almost noon. At the inn, both ice machines we tried to use were broken. We thought about a family reunion at the park, but now question the ability of staff to guarantee us a top-notch visit. Since prices at the park are quite expensive, the service should be commensurate.

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the campground last August 2004. We were very disappointed at the care and safety of the camground. There needs to be some work done on the sites. Paying top dollar for the site and getting something in return that looks like something along the side of the road will not do.
