Yankees not in the know may wonder at the wisdom of running a 10K race over Heartbreak Hill in July, but Atlantans and runners worldwide celebrate July 4th at the Peachtree Road Race, which annually hosts more than 50,000 participants. Savvy spectators take MARTA, which begins running at 5AM. They plan ahead and line the race route from Buckhead to Midtown, starting at the crack of dawn. Don't even think about finding a place to park. Every level of runner from amateur to world champion flocks to this third leg of road racing's 'Triple Crown,' the biggest of its kind, all for the glory of winning a T-shirt. Wheelchair races begin first, at 6:55AM, followed by the footrace at 7:30AM. It may start early, but restaurants and bars offer enticing specials, and sometimes live entertainment. If it's the 4th in Atlanta, it must be the Peachtree Road Race.
