Rate and Write a Review From the moment Brandi Chastain dramatically stripped down to her sports bra to celebrate the U.S. Women's Soccer Team gold medal victory in the 1996 Olympics, women's soccer has taken America by storm. The WUSA now rivals the men's pro soccer league in popularity, and with several members of that infamous squad in their lineup, the Atlanta Beat have become one of the league's hottest teams to watch. Starting in 2002, Morris Brown College's historic Herndon Stadium will be the home of the Beat, offering a prime downtown location mere blocks from the Georgia Dome. Built in 1948, the stadium got a $21 million renovation prior to the 1996 Olympics, when it served as the official field hockey venue. In addition to serving as home field for the Morris Brown Fighting Wolverines football team, Herndon frequently hosts high school sports and band competitions, and has served as a practice site for teams preparing for the Super Bowl, Peach Bowl and SEC championship games. With a seating capacity of 15,000, Herndon Stadium gives the Beat the third largest capacity in the WUSA, and the stadium's new natural grass turf makes it one of the Southeast's premiere soccer facilities. -- Bret Love
