To the casual passerby, Denny's might look like an average all-American pub -- you'd never guess it to be at the crux of an epic burger war. But it's true -- within these modest walls, a hamburger was crafted of such legendary proportions that, until February 2005, even the mightiest stomachs despaired of digesting it. Weighing in at 96 oz. -- that's a hefty 6 lbs. -- Ye Olde 96er was the subject of eating contests, newspaper articles and plenty of Internet rumor. Until a diner in New Jersey came up with a 12-pounder. Not to be outdone, Denny's answered back in late April 2005 with the Beer Barrel Belly Buster, a 15-pound behemoth that includes 10.5 pounds of ground beef, 25 slices of cheese, a head of lettuce, three tomatoes, two onions, a cup-and-a-half each of mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard and banana peppers -- and let's not forget the giant bun. Though several have tried, none have yet been able to finish it within the three-hour time limit necessary to procure the special certificate and other honors offered to daring diners. Oh, and if you're wondering who finally vanquished Ye Olde 96er? It was Kate Stelnick, a 100-pound female college student from Princeton, New Jersey.
