Food was average. Service sucked. Gotta stop reading the reviews. Only thing M.A.D. was me. Forget about it.

my wifef and I wanted something different, so we took your advise about a best breakfast, but it was the worst.I had the sausage gravy over biscuits, the gravy was like water and the eggs were the smalest I have ever see; I asked for soft poched and twice they came out well done.. My wife had the hash, and was a plate of mush. The worst I have ever had.......

It really all depends on who's cooking at the time. The food was really good in the early `90's. I went twice since 1999, and both times the hash browns were awful (they used to be heavenly!) I've *never* had a problem with service and I've been there too many weekends to count. "Iron Weed" *was* filmed there - they have photos to prove it! The owners are so nice, they talked with my Mom forever and showed her a photo albumn. My favorites are: M.A.D. eggs (curry), M.A.D. irish toast, and belgian waffles!

One goes to M.A.D. not for the ambience but for the uniqueness of its atmosphere, clientele, and the FOOD! Cliff and Jane are wonderful folk. They have brought gourmet breakast/brunch to Broadway in Albany. This diner and its owners have character. We have sampled everything on the menu and never have been disappointed. Cliff even showed us how to eat The Bostonian.

After hearing so much hype about this quaint little diner, I had to try it. The hours are very odd - they close at 2:15 pm. Upon entering, I was a little taken aback at the condition of the joint - it was greasy, dirty and not very well kept. Signs on the walls were old and grease splattered and just looked horrible. I know some may say 'this is part of the atmosphere,' but there's a fine line between authentic and run-down.
I sat at the counter and watched the cook prepare my meal. I was not impressed. In between flipping items and mixing things, he would attempt to clean the walls, etc. then use his bare hands that he had just used to clean the wall to pick up the food and move it on the grill! Yikes!
Once I got my food, I was very disappointed. The hash browns were barely lukewarm and tough as leather. Totally and utterly tasteless. They were without a doubt the worst I've ever had. The eggs were fine and the chicken sausage was fine, but my entire plate was literally dripping in lard. when I watched the cook prepare my toast, just before removing the toast from the grill he dipped a brush into a bowl of lard, then slathered pure grease onto both sides of my toast. Overkill to say the least.
The service was fine, but there were only 2 other people in the place so I can't tell you what it's like when it's busy. For such greasy basic food, the prices were a little on the high side for what you get.
Overall, the meal was terrible. The amount of grease was ridiculous. Instead of flavoring things with spices, etc. it seems they use grease on everything.
Maybe I hit them at a bad time - I don't know. But I'm not going to waste my time going back to find out. One bad experience is enough to keep me away - especially with so many other options.
I would definitely not suggest this place unless you like eating in a grease pit.
